MAXIMILIAN URIARTE is a New York Times bestselling author, artist, creator, filmmaker, Marine Corps infantry veteran, and overall cool dude.
Born and raised in Corvallis, OR, Max joined the Marine Corps at the age of 19 in 2006. Serving as an 0351 Infantry Assaultman, Max deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2009 with 3rd Bn, 3rd Marine Regiment out of Hawaii. While still active duty, Max created and published the hit webcomic TERMINAL LANCE, which soon snowballed into the most popular military comic strip in the world.
In 2010, Max left the Corps and used his GI Bill to study animation at the California College of Arts in the San Francisco Bay Area.
In 2013, shortly after graduating with a BFA in Animation, Max began working on THE WHITE DONKEY, his first feature-length graphic novel with the help of a massively successful Kickstarter campaign raising over $150,000. Max self-published THE WHITE DONKEY in early 2016 and then immediately secured a publishing deal with Little, Brown & Co. shortly after. THE WHITE DONKEY went on to become a New York Times bestseller and won countless awards and rave-reviews for its poignant and heartbreaking story.
Following up the success of THE WHITE DONKEY, Max wrote and illustrated his second full-length graphic novel, BATTLE BORN: LAPIS LAZULI, published by Little, Brown & Co. in 2020.
Max now lives in Los Angeles, CA, and works as an author and in the film industry as a writer, director and storyboard artist. Max is married to his amazing wife Rachael Uriarte and has a dog named Charlie.
